Chi Ch'uan or Taijiquan (literally "supreme ultimate fist"),
commonly known as Tai Chi, is an "internal" Chinese martial
art which is known for the claims of health and longevity benefits
made in recent medical studies.
Tai
Chi is a "soft" style martial art, applied with as complete
a relaxation or softness in the muscles as possible, distinguishing
its theory and application from that of the "hard" styles
which use a degree of tension in the muscles.
The
core training involves two primary features: the first being the
solo form, a slow sequence of movements which emphasises a straight
spine, relaxed breathing and a natural range of motion; the second
being different styles of pushing hands or tui shou, for training
sensitivity in the reflexes in order to learn leverage, timing,
coordination and positioning when interacting with another.
